New Deviants
I’ve been doing research in China and Hong Kong art all 2011, and now I’m working on editing a book with interviews to chinese artists, together with artist Chris Kelley. We will explore issues of censorship and how they affect the art and daily practice of these artists. We will discuss with these artists what is taboo, how is it possible to circumvent or subvert the rules, and other topics.
It’s really interesting to explore such a different culture, and I’m trying to start some projects to promote the artistic and cultural exchange between China and Latin America.
This book is will be a good introduction to understanding how to work there, any person related to art and culture that wants to go to the East to do projects will face a lot of difficulties, and particularly in China under a Communist government, there are many things that in the west we are used to, but in China are forbidden , and in some cases can end in imprissionment (like Ai Wei Wei case), expulsion of the country, exile etc. Sometimes a misunderstanding in the cultural codes can make things go really wrong.
